Lori provided. When we embarked on our adoption journey we wrote our profile with very little guidance, and writing about yourself can be so difficult. Add to that the uncertainty of whether a potential birthparent will choose you. You worry about every little word, and every single picture! We were to the point where we needed to make sure that our profile spoke to birthparents and showed them that we would make wonderful parents! Unfortunately, our version didn't exactly do that, but that's where Lori came in.
The process was quite simple. We filled out a brief questionnaire. Then Lori analyzed our hard copy profile (for the agency) and our online profile (the one we advertise ourselves). She was able to give us 23 suggestions and improvements. She also helped us with some rewording so that our intentions were clear. For example, our profile was cluttered with tons of photos. Lori suggested that we reduce the number of photos so that potential birthparents would want to know more about us. So our photos went down from 10 scrapbook-type pages to 2. By implementing her suggestions for content, we were also able to recreate a profile that showed that we would make excellent parents, where before it just showed we were just a good aunt & uncle. She helped us show potential birthparents that while our lives are full right now, we have room for a child and can't wait to include them.
Lori delivered her suggestions in such a loving way that made us both feel very comfortable with hearing her suggestions. Receiving her review felt more like being gently guided through the profile process and we didn't feel like we were being critiqued personally. After receiving her report and review we felt invigorated about making the changes and are in the final stages of completing the design of the document and changing our online profile. We just needed a little outside help. :)
We still have yet to see if improving our profile is what will do the trick, but in adoption you just never know what it is that makes the connection. Our goal is to bring a child into our lives and our adoption profile is just a part of that. We felt strongly that we needed to do something to increase our chances of reaching the right potential birthparent and the one we created on our own wasn't working. Having that third-party perspective really helped create a profile that represents us both as loving and attentive would-be parents and we're so happy with the results."
